Maybe this is your first visit to Grebbestad. Or maybe you’ve been here for many summers – but still missed out on some of the resort’s real gems.
Our picturesque fishing village in northern Bohuslän is known for its fantastic seafood and vibrant coastal culture, but there is much more to discover for those who want to experience Grebbestad as the locals do.
We asked Tanumshede-born Anna Hochholzer to share her top tips. Together with her husband, she runs the family-run restaurant Grebys in the middle of Grebbestadsbryggan, a well-known meeting place for both visitors and locals.
– Grebbestad is really vibrant all year round, with many open restaurants and a lively community. We who run businesses here support and help each other,” she says.
Here are some of Anna’s personal favorites:
Sjögrens i backen – a real classic
An obvious stop is Sjögrens i backen, which is a popular café with a generous breakfast buffet, good lunches and homemade coffee. Both visitors and locals go here all year round. Here you can start the day with a long breakfast or sit down for a lunch or coffee in a relaxed atmosphere.
Discover the local
Shopping locally is important to keep Grebbestad alive all year round.
Take a stroll past small shops like Pickles on Nedre Långgatan and Frida’s Home – two personal favorites with a carefully selected range.
If you want to try something really unique, you can Madvraget on board M/S Donalda, it is a small restaurant down below deck where classic fish dishes are served in a genuine archipelago environment. An excursion to Grimslätts Gård outside Fjällbacka is also well worth the time, with its charming farm shop.
– I learned that as a child. If local shops and restaurants are to survive, you have to shop there, they are what keep the community alive all year round.
Music by the sea
Grebbestad has an unusually rich musical life for a small coastal town, and during the summer live music is a natural part of the atmosphere.
– I love live music and am lucky to experience a lot of it at work. At Grebys, we have live concerts every night throughout the summer and also during other parts of the year,” says Anna.
But music can be found all over the area, from after beach and restaurants to small stages around the region. During the summer months, there is almost always something going on for those who want to end the day with music and a sea view.
Two recurring features that many return to year after year are the premiere of BeachClub at TanumStrand and the concert series Grebbestad Live.
The summer premiere at the BeachClub is traditionally held on Midsummer’s Day and offers an atmospheric day party with seafood platter, bubbly, live music and white attire, a popular start to the summer that requires a pre-booked ticket.
Grebbestad Live is organized at Charlottenlund Folk Park, Lunden, and every summer brings together a number of concerts with well-known artists during the month of July.
Walk along the Bohus coast
One of the best ways to experience Grebbestad is on foot. There are many beautiful walks along the sea and through small coastal communities.
Sannäs, Havstenssund and Veddö nature reserves are nice excursion destinations, as are the walks around Kämpersvik and Grönemad where sea and cliffs meet. Here you can experience Bohuslän in its most peaceful and natural form.
Everyday luxury by the sea
TanumStrand is a place Anna likes to return to (and is actually a former workplace).
– It’s great to have TanumStrand so close. It’s open all year round and it’s easy to add a little luxury to everyday life.
Stop by at Pizzeria Sjöboden Udden during your walk, relax in the lobby bar or treat yourself to a few hours in the spa, an easy way to make your stay extra enjoyable.
