Tjurpannans Nature Reserve in Grebbestad

Only 15 minutes by car north of TanumStrand in northern Bohuslän lies an incredibly powerful and beautiful nature reserve with a clear horizon to the west. Tjurpannan has no protective outer archipelago, and the inner archipelago fairway passes close by and has always been a feared passage among seafarers. The western part of the area is characterized by steep rocky beaches, here and there broken bays with boulder, gravel and in some cases sandy beaches.
A piece of the puzzle in a network to preserve biodiversity
Tjurpannan Nature Reserve is part of an EU network called “Natura 2000“, which means that it is classified as an area with special protection or conservation values. These areas have a conservation plan that identifies the natural values and describes what is required for the values to remain in the long term. The aim of the network is to ensure the long-term survival of Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
Hiking
The exposed location and previous grazing have created a very open moorland and rocky landscape. The area is easy to walk and from the many high points you can enjoy magnificent views from the mainland across the archipelago to the horizon in the southwest. If you visit Tjurtpannan in summer, you will find several fine bathing spots. From the north to the south tip, the Tjurtpannan nature reserve measures about one kilometer. At its widest, the peninsula is almost 400 meters. If you walk around the entire nature reserve, you cover just over two km. A visit to Tjurpannan during a storm is an exciting nature experience, but be careful – don’t go too far out on the rocks!
Rare plants
The nature in the reserve has been shaped by its exposed location. There are coastal meadows and marshes, steep rocky beaches and moorland, among other things. Along the gravel beaches grow rare plants such as beach vetch, oysterwort and beach poppy.
Find your way to Tjurpannans Nature Reserve
From the E6, take road 163 towards Grebbestad, then turn off towards Havstenssund. Drive 4 km north and turn left at the sign “Naturreservat”. You should now pass a campsite and then drive straight ahead for another 250m. Park in the large parking lot and walk the last bit out along the gravel road. The nature reserve is happy to welcome you, but please note that it is not allowed to camp, make fires, damage or disturb wildlife, litter, pick flowers or drive motorized vehicles beyond the parking lot.
