About the litter on Bohuslän’s beaches

In just a few decades, marine litter has become a major and very serious problem both at sea and along our coasts. Bohuslän has long been particularly exposed to marine litter and receives several hundred tons of litter annually from all over the world due to ocean currents.

Help pick up the litter

There are many ways to help pick up litter along the sea and in nature. For example, to make it easy to help, free beach cleaning kits are available at several tourist offices and facilities. There are also bag holders on the islands where you can pick up bags. Your best help is the digital beach cleaning map, where you can, for example, mark where you have picked up litter and then get help with collection. Here you can also see or mark where there is litter right now.

5 facts about marine litter
  • Five tubs of rubbish – that’s how much rubbish washes up on the Bohuslän coast… every hour.
  • Around 80% of marine litter comes from land.
  • It takes around 200-500 years for an aluminum can to be broken down by nature. The equivalent time for a glass jar is one million years.
  • 94% of all the space in the ocean is not visible, because it sinks to the seabed after a while.
  • Plastic that ends up in nature breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces and eventually becomes microplastics. No one knows exactly how long these plastics stay in nature – but it takes a long, long time.

Any material that ends up in the sea that should not be there is called marine litter. It may have been dumped directly into the sea, or carried there by rainwater and rivers. Did you know that 80% of all marine litter comes from land?
